The first rap artist to build a corporate empire — and one of the first to pivot from entertainment to Silicon Valley tech investing.

BIOGRAPHY

Stanley Kirk Burrell, known as MC Hammer, was raised in Oakland, California. As one of the first globally successful independent rap artists, Hammer built a business empire in the early 1990s that included a clothing line, production company, and a personal staff of over 200. After significant financial setbacks, Hammer reinvented himself as a Silicon Valley technology entrepreneur and investor. He became one of the first entertainers to attend Y Combinator's Demo Day regularly and was an early investor in multiple tech companies, earning him respect in both entertainment and Silicon Valley circles. His resilience and reinvention arc remain among the most powerful in entertainment.
