Rose from the Bronx to hosting Showtime's only late-night show — built an independent media voice through Twitter and podcasting.
Daniel Baker, known as Desus Nice, was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. He and his childhood friend The Kid Mero met on Twitter and built a shared audience through unfiltered, comedic commentary on sports, politics, and culture. Their podcast grew into a Vice/Viceland show, and eventually Showtime's 'Desus & Mero' — the first late-night show hosted by two Black men from New York in network history. Desus and Mero built their platform independently from the ground up, proving that authentic urban voice, nurtured through independent digital media, could compete with and surpass traditional late-night television.
Built audience from zero through independent Twitter presence and voice
Co-launched podcast before any traditional media deal
Graduated from podcast to Vice/Viceland to Showtime — retaining brand identity
Negotiated Showtime deal independently — broke late-night TV's diversity barrier
Used cultural authenticity as a competitive moat no network could replicate
